Hamilton shines in the rain to win Investec SA Women’s Open

CAPE TOWN, Western Cape – As a lover of scrapbooking, England’s Esme Hamilton now has a very special golf memory to add to her collection after claiming her maiden Ladies European Tour and Sunshine Ladies Tour title in the Investec South African Women’s Open at Royal Cape Golf Club on Sunday.

Hamilton closed with a 71 on a final day of constant rain to win on 15 under par, two strokes clear of fellow English professional Cara Gainer who signed for a 72. Slovenia’s Pia Babnik took third place on 12 under par with a final round of 74.

Caitlyn Macnab finished as the leading South African on two over par following a closing 78, while Lisa Coetzer claimed the Jackie Mercer Trophy as the leading amateur on 11 over par with a final round of 78.

Hamilton was delighted to claim her maiden title in only her second season on the Ladies European Tour.

“This means a lot. I’m a bit lost for words. This is something I’ve dreamt about for a while. Hopefully this is the start of many more wins. I’m very ambitious and I’m excited about how I can build on this. But I’m going to make sure I enjoy this first,” she said.

Hamilton and Babnik teed off the final round tied for the lead on 13 under par, with Gainer just one shot behind them. Playing in the final group together, the title was a battle between all three of them as they each shared the lead on occasion.

The only significant mistake made by Hamilton on the final day was a loose drive on the ninth hole, which led to a double bogey and saw her tied for the lead with Gainer going into the back nine. But three birdies on the back nine secured her the title.

“I tried to just play my own game, which is a little harder when you have an LET title on the line. The steady golf made the difference today. I needed a lot of patience because this is a tight golf course and mistakes are going to happen. When I did make a mistake I either recovered well or stayed patient and waited for the birdies to come. I was so in the zone today because I felt like anything could happen.”

Hamilton is one of the many success stories of the Sunshine Ladies Tour as it played a part in her journey to this milestone.

“I played some Sunshine Ladies Tour events last season and it means a lot thinking about how far I’ve come since last year. I didn’t have a full LET card, but with the Investec support of the Sunshine Ladies Tour there are good money events that enables us to earn and build our career, and that means a lot,” she said.

The Sunshine Ladies Tour Investec Order of Merit will only be concluded after the MCB Ladies Classic in Mauritius from 1-3 May 2026.

German engineering graduate Schmidt builds Investec SA Women’s Open lead

CAPE TOWN, Western Cape – As the oldest golf club in South Africa, Royal Cape has seen it all. But on Thursday it experienced a first as Germany’s Patricia Schmidt carded her lowest round on the Ladies European Tour of 10-under-par 63 to lead the Investec South African Women’s Open.

Schmidt’s round of eight birdies and an eagle on a magnificent autumn day in the Cape earned her a two-stroke lead over Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Soenderby and Slovenia’s Pia Babnik in this Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned event.

France’s Agathe Laisne, the winner of last week’s Joburg Ladies Open, came through the opening round five strokes off the lead. Casandra Alexander and rookie Caitlin Macnab are the leading South Africans following their rounds of three-under-par 70, while amateur Lisa Coetzer made a solid start with her round of two under par.

As she walked out of score recording, a few Royal Cape members applauded Schmidt for a remarkable round of golf. But while they were well aware of the magic she was making on their fairways, Schmidt was so focused she was almost oblivious to it.

“Honestly, I didn’t even know I’d shot 10 under until I got a high five on the last hole,” said Schmidt.

It was a round that was anchored in a sublime short game.

“I wouldn’t say it was the greatest round off the tee box, but my whole approach game and my recovery game was just really good. It was just one of those days where you stand behind a putt and read it and just clearly see the line. It’s the type of feeling you look for but which is really hard to find. Today it was just there for my putting,” she said.

The former Physics student and Mechanical Engineering graduate has clearly applied her mind to the game of golf, and in particular her putting, and came up with an approach which worked for her on Thursday.

“I think it’s just trusting the feeling and not overcomplicating it. I just tried to do that the whole round and not want to hole the putt so badly that I overcomplicate it. But rather to keep a fast routine, focus on a good rhythm, give it a chance and see if the putt drops.”

As much as her short game stood out, so did her recoveries from these tree-lined fairways.

“What has helped me this year is my consistency. Even though I’ve not hit every fairway, the misses I have are way smaller. So if I need to make a recovery I’ve managed to save par, which I’ve done way better now compared to last year.”

Alexander chasing her place in Investec SA Women’s Open history

CAPE TOWN, Western Cape – With three Rugby World Cup winners in her pro-am fourball on Wednesday, Casandra Alexander is chasing her own “World Cup” this week as she seeks to add her name alongside the greats of South African golf with a victory in the Investec South African Women’s Open at Royal Cape Golf Club.

Rugby World Cup winners Schalk Burger, Schalk Brits and Steven Kitshoff all turned up to play an official pro-am round with South Africa’s top-ranked Alexander, who this week climbed to a career high of 40th on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

And after losing in a playoff for last week’s Joburg Ladies Open, Alexander has her sights firmly set on the Investec South African Women’s Open crown.

“I’m excited for the week. This is the big one. It’s our home title. It’s the one every South African wants to win. It’s definitely a special week,” she said at the venerable Royal Cape Golf Club ahead of Thursday’s first round of this Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned tournament.

Alexander finished second in this event last year, and also has previous finishes of fourth and seventh in her national Open. As she continues her climb up the world rankings and as the dominant face of South African women’s professional golf, a victory in the Investec South African Women’s Open would be a very timely confirmation of her undoubted rise in the game.

“I actually got a Facebook reminder of my post last year after I won the Investec Order of Merit, and I’d written that I was really happy to jump into the top 100 in the world. It’s pretty cool to see that this time last year I was top 100 and now I’m top 40. Hopefully we keep going. It’s something I’m proud of, but at the same time you have to keep working on it because it’s so easy to drop down again,” she said.

“I’ve been playing this golf course since I was young. We’ve also had a few Sunshine Ladies Tour events here over the years. I like the course. It’s a great layout and if the wind gets going it can be tough. You’ve also got to hit good tee shots with the trees here. It is very soft with all the rain we’ve had so I think the scores will be low. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Her own challenge comes at a time when Investec have strengthened their significant commitment to the women’s game in South Africa.

“This is our ninth consecutive year as title sponsor of the Investec South African Women’s Open, and we’re at the oldest golf club in South Africa this week. We’ve deepened our investment in South African women’s golf with a five-year renewal of our sponsorship of the Investec South African Women’s Open, the Investec Order of Merit, the Investec Homegrown Award and our sponsored golfers, and from next year we’ll be adding R1 million to the prize purse as we continue to address pay parity and elevate the national Open, and give our women’s professionals and the talent we have in this country the opportunity to play, perform and earn,” said Peta Dixon, Head of Sponsorships, Investec.

Laisne wins Joburg Ladies Open after marathon playoff

JOHANNESBURG – France’s Agathe Laisne won a dramatic five-hole playoff that finished in the dark to claim the Joburg Ladies Open at Randpark Golf Club on Sunday.

Laisne won with a birdie on the final hole of a marathon playoff to claim her second Ladies European Tour title.

“That was stressful with a lot of trips back to 18, but I’m glad it ended well,” said Laisne.

This final round had everything in it.

South Africa’s Casandra Alexander went into the final round four shots off the lead and surged through the field with two eagles on the front nine and then a key stretch of four birdies in five holes on the back nine for a 66 to finish on 19 under par.

She had an opportunity to win outright on 20 under par, but after a lightning delay she returned to bogey the last and fall into a playoff with Laisne and Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley. Laisne closed with a 69 and Rudgeley a 67.

Playing the par-five 18th the first time, Alexander was knocked out with a par to the birdies of her two opponents.

And then Laisne and Rudgeley went at each other with some of the best playoff golf seen on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.

They both birdied the second playoff hole. Then they parred the third playoff hole.

With darkness falling and in attempt to get a result, the position of the hole was recut. It didn’t deter both Laisne and Rudgeley who birdied the hole again.

The hole was then shortened to a par three, and Laisne made the crucial birdie to win.

Alexander three off the pace in Joburg Ladies Open

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s top-ranked Casandra Alexander is three strokes off the lead after the first round of the Joburg Ladies Open at Randpark Golf Club on Thursday as she chases her second title in this Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour event.

Alexander opened with a four-under-par 69 and is chasing the shared lead of French duo Agathe Laisne and Ariane Klotz, and American Brianna Navarrosa on seven under par.

The leading trio are one stroke clear of the field after an opening day where a soft and receptive golf course made for good scoring.

Alexander teed off her round on the 10th and shrugged off an early bogey with five birdies, an eagle and a further two bogeys thereafter.

“I wasn’t too worried about starting with a bogey on 10. That is one of the tougher holes on this course, so my caddie and I said in our prep for the week that if we could make par there all week we’d be happy because it is a tougher hole. So I didn’t panic with that opening bogey. It wasn’t a solid round. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but a tidy rollercoaster,” she said.

She briefly held a share of the on-course lead with her eagle on the par-five second hole, her 11th hole.

“I hit a really good tee shot and had a nice number for my four iron in, so just trusted it off the left with the wind from that direction. And I rolled the putt in. An easy way to make an eagle, I guess.”

Alexander is looking to become only the second multiple winner of the Joburg Ladies Open following her victory in 2021, and which would see her join Ashleigh Buhai as the only players to have achieved this.

“It’s still early days, but it’s nice to shoot an under par round on day one. I had a disappointing bogey finish with a three putt, but that’s golf and it happens. I’ve hopefully got three days of good golf to come.”

At the top of the leaderboard, Laisne dropped only one shot in her round. She arrived in South Africa in terrific form having claimed her maiden victory on the Ladies European Tour in Australia in February and a runners-up finish in the Women’s Australian Open in March. She’s currently second on the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit behind Alexander, and is one of the few players who chooses not to have a caddie.

“I like to do my own thing. I don’t have to worry about when the caddie is arriving at the course. I can work according to my own timing,” she said.

SA’s Alexander leads top-class field for Joburg Ladies Open

JOHANNESBURG – Casandra Alexander is back on home fairways this week as she leads the South African challenge in a Joburg Ladies Open at Randpark Golf Club that has drawn the top-ranked players from both the Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour for this co-sanctioned event.

Alexander returns in some of the best form of her career, having risen to number one on the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit and now the highest ranked South African at 41st in the world.

According to her coach, Grant Veenstra, who works with many of South Africa’s top men’s and women’s professionals, Alexander has the potential to become even better.

“I definitely think she is a world top-10 player. No doubt. She has always been an athlete and a great competitor who doesn’t like to lose. But now we’ve worked really hard on a consistency to her swing that is showing itself in her performances,” he says.

Alexander returns as the last South African champion of the Joburg Ladies Open in 2021 and the runner-up last year. But she’s expecting a tough challenge from a top-class field this week.

“There are a lot more Europeans coming out to the Sunshine Ladies Tour. Some really good players are coming out here, and that’s what our Tour needs. We need that push of some good young players and then the experienced campaigners so that our quality of golf goes up,” she said.

As for her own game, Alexander is in a good place for the challenge of Randpark’s championship Firethorn course.

“My ball striking and iron play have always been my strong suite, and I think it’s important to maintain the skills you have while working on other areas of your game. I’ve been focusing on the short game a lot this year. Putting in particular has been a big focus point for me this year.”

With Alexander in the field as well as France’s Agathe Laisne and Australia’s Kelsey Bennett, the Ladies European Tour’s top three-ranked players are in Johannesburg.

From the Sunshine Ladies Tour, Germany’s Celina Sattelkau tees off as the leader on the Investec Order of Merit and is hunting a third victory on the Tour this season after winning the opening two tournaments. Fellow German Sophie Witt, currently second on the Investec Order of Merit, is also in the field this week.

The South African challenge is bolstered by Danielle du Toit, Gabrielle Venter and Nadia van der Westhuizen, who have all won on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this season.

And the presence of France’s Lois Lau means that every single winner on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this season will be playing this week.

It’s certainly a week of opportunity for the field, with the last two winners of the Joburg Ladies Open – Mimi Rhodes and Chiara Tamburlini – having both gone on to secure LPGA Tour cards thereafter.

Dominant Van Der Westhuizen wins ABSA Ladies invitational

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Nadia van der Westhuizen powered her way to a dominant ABSA Ladies Invitational win at Royal Johannesburg on Saturday, securing her fourth Sunshine Ladies Tour title by seven strokes.

Van Der Westhuizen closed with a 66 to win on 17 under par, with fellow South African Jordan Rothman in second place on 10 under following her final round of 69.

“I am extremely happy about this title. I was leading from the first day, so I am very happy with the result,” Van Der Westhuizen said.

Van Der Westhuizen had the perfect start to Saturday’s final round, opening with an eagle and two birdies over the first four holes.

“It was a bit of a stressful morning, but I started with the eagle and just kept on pushing from there. As soon as I made that eagle I relaxed a little bit, but kept pushing and turned in four-under after the first nine holes. There were a lot of positives as I committed to playing aggressive golf,” she said.

It has not been the easiest tournament with a lot of time lost on the opening day due to bad weather, resulting in Van Der Westhuizen having to play 32 holes on Friday. She is now looking forward to a well-deserved rest.

“I am really excited to have a bit of a break now and spend some time with family and friends as it has been a tough three days. I am however excited about the rest of the season coming up.”

The Sunshine Ladies Tour now heads into the co-sanctioned tournaments with the Ladies European Tour, beginning at Randpark Golf Club for the Joburg Ladies Open that will take place from 16-19 April.

Van Der Westhuizen grabs clubhouse lead in ABSA Ladies invitational

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Nadia van der Westhuizen ended Friday’s second day of the ABSA Ladies Invitational as the clubhouse leader on 11 under par, but with the round still to be completed at Royal Johannesburg.

The second round will resume at 06h15 on Saturday morning after being suspended due to bad light, with the third and final round not starting before 09:00.

Van Der Westhuizen, who signed for a second round of 68, currently leads by four shots over Tina Mazarino who also managed to complete her second round of 68.

Sanna Nuutinen, currently through eight holes, and Doris Chen, currently through five holes, were well placed on seven under when play ended on Friday.

The bad weather of the opening day means the second round will have to be completed on Saturday morning. Van Der Westhuizen had to complete her first round on Friday morning before going into her second round. She managed to do so with a 65 to lead by one shot.

“I am extremely happy about the first round. I haven’t had a bogey-free round in a very long time, I can’t even remember when last that happened,” she said.

Van Der Westhuizen had to endure a long day on Friday.

“I managed to finish 32 holes today to also finish the second round. I was a little bit nervous on the first tee, so starting with three birdies calmed the nerves a little bit. I did hit a few good shots during the round, but the putter was a bit cold. The birdie on the last hole almost topped the day for me –  finishing it off strong,” she added.

With two top-10 finishes already this year, Van Der Westhuizen will be banking on what has worked for her so far come Saturday’s final round.

“I think I will stick to the same gameplan. My caddie and I have really been working hard together trying to manage the scores as it is a tough course. I will be trying to give myself as many chances as possible, be aggressive when I need to, and know when not to be aggressive,” Van Der Westhuizen said.

Birdie blitz carries Venter to Platinum Ladies Open title

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – South Africa’s Gabrielle Venter birdied her final two holes of regulation play and then beat Norway’s Madelene Stavnar in a playoff to win the Platinum Ladies Open at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate on Friday.

After her strong finish to close with a 66 and tie Stavnar for the lead on 16 under par following the Norwegian’s final round of 68, Venter carried that momentum into the playoff and birdied the first playoff hole to win and claim her second Sunshine Ladies Tour title.

“I am very happy. I played great, hit some really good shots, and didn’t make any mistakes, which is a positive. I am very happy with the win,” Venter said.

The South African duo of Bobbi Brown (66) and Jordan Rothman shared third place with Iceland’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir (67) on 14 under par.

After battling with flu as well as a tough 27-hole second day cause by weather delays, Venter gave it everything during Friday’s final round knowing she had to be aggressive to stand a chance.

“I am still struggling with flu but the body held up fine and it didn’t hold me back today. Coming into the back nine I was hitting great shots but wasn’t making any putts, but I stayed consistent and aggressive. I knew on the 18th hole I had to go for it and then hit a really good drive to give myself the opportunity to do so, and I made the birdie putt,” Venter said.

Playing the par-five 18th again in the playoff, her gameplan was the same.

“I almost hit it in the exact same place, but unfortunately it ended up in a divot. I was thinking about laying it up, but decided it’s now or never. I just hit my five-wood as hard as I could, and it made it up the hill, which Ieft me with a two-putt for birdie and the win,” Venter said.

The Sunshine Ladies Tour will next head to Royal Johannesburg for the ABSA Ladies Invitational that will take place from 26-28 March.

Stavnar holds clubhouse lead in Platinum Ladies Open

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Norway’s Madelene Stavnar holds the clubhouse lead in the Platinum Ladies Open on 12 under par, and with the round set to be completed on Friday morning following the weather delays on the opening day.

The round will be completed on Friday morning before the start of the final round.

Stavnar managed to complete her second round on Thursday and signed for a 69 to lead by a single stroke over Scotland’s Lorna McClymont, who posted a 65.

The best placed South African after the second day is Gabrielle Venter (65), who had to navigate 27 holes to complete her first and second rounds. She is in joint third place on 10 under par with Kristyna Napoleaova (67), and Louisa Carlbom, who is through nine holes of her second round.

“I started off a bit slow today as I am a bit sick with flu. I wasn’t feeling my best at all,” said Venter.

“It was tough having to go out again today. But my second round was a great round. My ball striking was very good. I felt like I was playing very nicely and could have probably made a few more birdies. But all-in-all it was a really good round, especially for such a long day. I just battled it out today.”

Venter is hunting a third Sunshine Ladies Tour title this week.

“I will definitely stay aggressive, but I’ll keep taking it shot by shot. As I’m not feeling well, I don’t want to waste too much energy by thinking too much. So I will stay aggressive and see what happens,” Venter said.
