Floyd mines a brilliant 60 for maiden win in Platinum Ladies Open
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – A nine-birdie blitz combined with an eagle for a bogey-free final round of 11-under-par 60 secured South Africa’s Kiera Floyd her maiden professional win on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in the Platinum Ladies Open on Friday.
Floyd showed her intent with a front nine of 29 and then rounded it off with a closing nine of 31 on the par-71 Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate course for her lowest round of golf in her professional career and a winning score of 15 under par.
England’s Hayley Davis finished second on 14 under par with a closing five-under-par 66 followed by South Africa’s Casandra Alexander in third place on 12 under par after she also signed for a final round of 69.
Floyd was in awe of her own performance on Friday.
“I honestly have no words. It doesn’t feel real right now, but I think it is definitely going to kick in later. It’s just amazing. This is my first victory on tour. I am trying to bring it back to reality. I honestly didn’t realise it today on the golf course either. When I got off after nine and I saw that I shot 29, and I was like…oh, ok.”
The 20-year-old Floyd said her putting was especially impressive during Friday’s round.
“I basically kept the ball in play off the tee and I hit a lot of greens which helped, but my putter was just on today. Something just kicked in with my putting and I just felt so comfortable over the ball. Everything was good, but the main aspect was my putting.”
The young golfer who turned professional in 2023 favours longer courses and confirmed that Blair Atholl suited her game particularly this week.
“This course suits my game. I am quite a long hitter so it doesn’t play as long for me but the course set-up was just perfect to my distances the whole day and the whole week, and it was just a pure golf course to play on. It just suited me. Even during the pro-am I shot five under, so I knew it was out there.”
Floyd was paired with Olivia Mehaffey from Northern Ireland during the final round and said she enjoyed the exposure to international competition.
“It’s so nice to have all the international players in the field. I played with Olivia Mehaffey today and I learnt so much from her – like how calm she is on the course. And if the European players make a drop, they just carry on. So, it is very nice and a good experience playing with them. Olivia said I made her round of six under par look terrible today,” laughed Floyd.
The ABSA Ladies Invitational is up next on the Sunshine Ladies Tour schedule and will be played from 27-29 March at Royal Johannesburg.

A little bit of luck goes a long way for Alexander in Platinum Ladies Open
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Swopping out her regular white golf ball for a pink ball during her round made all the difference to multiple Sunshine Ladies Tour winner Casandra Alexander’s second round in the Platinum Ladies Open at the par-71 Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate course on Thursday.
Alexander shot a second consecutive five-under-par 66 to take the lead on 10 under par, dropping only one shot during her second round. She leads by one over South Africa’s Tandi McCallum and England’s Hayley Davis going into Friday’s final round.
“I had a really slow start to the front nine. I started with a drop and then made a hallelujah putt on the par-five fifth to bring it back. I then made a bunch of pars in a row and said to my caddie, let’s change our ball to a different colour – a little bit of superstition going on there, I guess. Maybe there are some birdies in my pink ball and yes, things started getting going from there. I started firing through the back nine after a very long and boring front nine,” she said.
Alexander has had an impressive season to date on this year’s Sunshine Ladies Tour, claiming a win at the Jabra Ladies Classic in February and posting two top-three performances in the Standard Bank Ladies Open and the SuperSport Ladies Challenge.
“I think generally as a team we’ve made some good improvements to be able to play courses that don’t suit me and to get the ball in the hole no matter what the situation.
“Today my back was a little sore, so I knew I was going to have to manage how I play. I wasn’t going to hit them as close and I was working with that, so I think just identifying when we are not in the firing zone or the golf course doesn’t suit us and how we manage that – my team and I have done a great job with that.”
McCallum maintained her second place position during Thursday’s second round with a score of four-under-par 67 and nine under par for the tournament.

Norway’s Lund says SA is ‘something else’ as she leads Platinum Ladies Open
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Norway’s Karoline Lund produced her lowest round as a professional in the first round of the Platinum Ladies Open with a seven-under-par 64 on the par-71 Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate course on Wednesday, earning herself a one-shot lead over Nikki Hofstede from The Netherlands and England’s Hayley Davis.
The 26-year-old Lund, who said her practice round filled her with confidence for the challenge of this week, made five birdies and an eagle without dropping a single shot during the first round.
The field has been given an added incentive this week as the prize money has been increased by a further R200 000 to R1.2 million.
“I don’t want to say it’s easy, but today it felt easy. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and made a few putts as well, so it’s one of those good days. I went a little bit right of the green on the 13th hole and chipped in for eagle which was nice. The course is in great condition even though there has been a lot of rain. It just felt easy.”
Lund started playing golf with her father at the age of 11 at the golf course next to their vacation home in Sweden during family holidays. But she has been blown away by the quality of golf courses in South Africa.
“The courses in South Africa are a lot better for sure as we don’t really have the weather in Norway. We only have about six or seven months to play, so you can’t really compare the courses. South Africa is just something else.”
Lund said her strategy for the second round is “to just to play as aggressive as I did today and to stay in the process, taking one shot at a time and just have fun”.
South Africa’s Casandra Alexander, winner of this year’s Jabra Ladies Classic in February, and veteran golfer Tandi McCallum are two shots off the lead on five under par.

Moodley leads SA chase for Rookie honours at Platinum Ladies Open
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Kaiyuree Moodley is leading the South African charge for The R&A Rookie of the Year award on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this year as she heads into this week’s Platinum Ladies Open in second place on the standings after an impressive start to her professional career.
Moodley is making only her fourth professional start on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in this week’s 54-hole Platinum Ladies Open at the Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate from Wednesday to Friday, with prize money totalling R1 000 000.
The 23-year old golfer blazed through the last two events on the Sunshine Ladies Tour, finishing second in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge in early March and tying for third place in the Jabra Ladies Classic at the end of February. She led the first round of the Jabra Ladies Classic while posting her lowest professional score of six-under-par 66.
“It was only my third event as a professional so it felt really good to shoot my lowest professional score. Everything in my game was fantastic,” she said.
With the remaining half of this year’s eight tournaments on the Sunshine Ladies Tour to be played over the next four weeks, various international players are also in contention for The R&A Rookie of the Year award.
France’s Lucie Malchirand, the winner of the Standard Bank Ladies Open, is currently first on The R&A Rookie of the Year standings with Scotland’s Lorna McClymont rounding out the top three.
McClymont finished second in the Jabra Ladies Classic in only her third tournament since joining the professional ranks earlier this year, and after following her brother into the game.
“I got into golf when I was younger and my brother played. He was getting lessons at the time. So my mom and dad thought, let’s get Lorna lessons as well and that is kind of my story. My grandparents played as well so it has just been in the family,” said the 24-year-old.
A strong field has assembled for this week’s event including Nadia van der Westhuizen, winner of the SuperSport Ladies Challenge; Casandra Alexander, who won the Jabra Ladies Classic; and Danielle du Toit, who claimed her maiden victory at the NTT DATA Ladies Pro-Am.

Gutsy Van Der Westhuizen wins SuperSport Ladies Challenge
SUN CITY, North West – It wasn’t easy, but Nadia van der Westhuizen’s two-over-par 74 in the final round was still enough to earn her a one-shot victory in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International at Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club course on Friday.
Van Der Westhuizen claimed her second Sunshine Ladies Tour title on a total of three under par, with Kaiyuree Moodley finishing second on two under with a closing 69. Casandra Alexander took third place on one under with a final round of 73.
Van Der Westhuizen had a steady start to her round and was level par through her opening five holes. The sixth, seventh and eighth holes however produced two bogeys and a birdie, with van der Westhuizen turning in one over.
“It was very steady in the beginning. I hit the ball well. Then on the last couple of holes on the front nine I started to miss with my driver a little bit, and missed the fairways. If that happens on this course you are basically dead,” she said.
A birdie followed on the 11th, but Van Der Westhuizen found trouble again on the 15th with a double bogey.
“It was the driver again on the 15th. I think it was a little bit of nerves as well. But I tried to stay calm and collected for the rest of the round. I’m very happy with the result.”
The Gary Player course was a relentless challenge this week, with only three golfers managing to finish the tournament under par.
“I have to say the course was absolutely brutal. It is in beautiful condition but it is tough. If you miss the fairways, you are losing a shot or two and the greens are also quite quick. It was a tough challenge this week.”
This victory meant something special for Van Der Westhuizen.
“This one is absolutely so special for me. It’s not only in a golf aspect but definitely a personal one. I went to Q-School last year and missed my Ladies European Tour card by three shots. So, winning this one means so much in bringing some confidence back.”
Rookie Moodley had another good performance after finishing tied third in last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic.

Experienced Van Der Westhuizen leads into final round of SuperSport Ladies Challenge
SUN CITY, North West – Nadia van der Westhuizen used all of her experience on another challenging day at the Gary Player Country Club to claim a one-shot lead in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International.
Van Der Westhuizen, a winner on the Sunshine Ladies Tour and also a winner in the women’s competition of the Vodacom Origins of Golf on the Sunshine Tour, signed for the lowest round of the tournament thus far with a four-under-par 68 to lead on five under par overall.
“It was a wonderful day. It started off a bit shaky with the first hole but I had a good up-and-down for par there, and then just kept it steady from there. Then I just tried to keep it together on the back nine. I’m very happy with the round,” she said.
Her nearest challenger is Danielle de Toit on four under after her round of 70, while 2023 champion and last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic winner, Casandra Alexander, is currently third on two under after a second round of 69.
After turning in two under par for her round, Van Der Westhuizen made a further three birdies on the back nine and just one bogey.
“The first birdie on the back nine (on the 10th) was good, but I think I got a little bit ahead of myself and was too excited and made a drop on the 11th. My caddie told me to keep calm, just slow it down a bit, and stick to the process,” she said.
But she admits she had to draw on all of her experience to navigate a tough Gary Player Country Club course, with only eight players in the field able to shoot under par on day two.
“I must say the course is really playing tough. What I’ve learned in the past is that I don’t have to shoot lights out. Boring golf actually does it. For me it’s just about playing steady golf.”
The South African has her strategy worked out for Friday’s final day.
“I’ll definitely just stick to the same thing, do my processes well and just try and keep it in play.”
The second round also produced an ace, with South African Symone Henriques scoring a hole-in-one on the par-three 13th hole on her way to a total of seven over for the tournament.

South African duo in the hunt at SuperSport Ladies Challenge
SUN CITY, North West – South Africa’s Danielle du Toit and Kiera Floyd joined a four-way tie for the lead after a tough first round of the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International at Sun City on Wednesday.
The Gary Player Country Club course showed its teeth as Du Toit and Floyd as well as India’s Vidhatri Urs and Spain’s Harang Lee all posted opening rounds of two-under-par 70 to lead by one stroke.
The challenge posed by the Gary Player Country Club course was evident, with only nine players managing to shoot a score under par on day one of this Sunshine Ladies Tour event.
Du Toit found some trouble on the front nine, including a double-bogey on the par-four sixth hole.
“I think I played the golf course scared. I was very tentative on every shot I hit and that snowballed. You can’t do that ever. On the sixth I was in the bunker, and then I somehow could not get it on the green. It was just a mess,” she said.
But she managed to find some rhythm on her way back to the clubhouse, rolling in four birdies for a share of the lead.
“I just looked at my caddie and said I am playing scared golf, now I am just going to line it up, hit it well and have some faith in it. After that I started swinging freely and the momentum just rolled and a couple of putts fell.”
But Du Toit is not about to get ahead of herself on a golf course set up to punish anything hit offline.
“If you hit it in the rough here you are dead. I have my game plan to take out all the trouble and swing freely. Basically the same way I played back nine today.”
Casandra Alexander, the 2023 champion and last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic winner, fell victim to an unforgiving par-five 18th hole (the traditional ninth, but with the nines swopped for this tournament) as she carded an eight here on her way to a one-over-par 73.

Alexander ‘amped’ for SuperSport Ladies Challenge
SUN CITY, North West – Casandra Alexander is looking to entrench her position at the top of the Investec Order of Merit as she tees it up in this week’s SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International as a previous winner of this event and on a Gary Player Country Club course that always brings the best out of her game.
Alexander is already a winner on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this season following her victory in last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic, and before that she finished tied second in the Standard Bank Ladies Open hosted by the City of Cape Town. She returns to a tournament that she won in 2023 and also finished second in in 2022.
“I absolutely love the Gary Player Country Club. I’ve won there a few times before. I love the layout of the golf course. I know it like the back of my hand so I’m definitely going in there with a nice positive and confident attitude,” she said ahead of Wednesday’s first round.
“We do know it’s golf and anything can happen but I’m really looking forward to Sun City. I have missed it in the past because of Ladies European Tour events taking place over that time, so I’m really amped for this year’s event.”
Coming from Cape Town where the last two Sunshine Ladies Tournaments took place in dry and often windy conditions, Alexander says she’ll adjust her game to suit this week’s challenges.
“I’m sure Sun City is pretty wet from all the rain they’ve had so I think this week the course is going to allow nice and aggressive play. My team and I are really good at adapting to the changes as every week we are in a different country. So maybe this is an advantage I have over some of the South African players who don’t travel as much.”
Scotland’s Lorna McClymont, who finished second last week in only her third tournament since turning professional at the beginning of the year, is hoping to continue her good form.
“Last week I was good mentally, and I just kept myself in the moment enjoying every shot rather than thinking too much about everything. I’m just really enjoying playing in South Africa. The golf courses are amazing. The last two we played were in great condition. Everyone here does an amazing job. This week I have no expectations. I’m just going to take it all in and enjoy it,” she said.
France’s Lucie Malchirand, who claimed her first Sunshine Ladies Tour title in the Standard Bank Ladies Open hosted by the City of Cape Town, as well as Danielle du Toit, who lifted the trophy at this year’s NTT DATA Ladies Pro-Am, will join South African rookie Kaiyuree Moodley at Sun City.

Alexander wins her second Jabra Ladies Classic title
CAPE TOWN, Western Cape – South Africa’s Casandra Alexander held her nerve to lift the Jabra Ladies Classic trophy for the second time in her career, and becoming the first multiple winner of this Sunshine Ladies Tour title since 2019.
Alexander went into the final day with a two-shot lead after bettering the women’s course record during the second round, and closed with a 67 to win by four shots on 14 under par.
Scotland’s Lorna McClymont finished second on 10 under par with a final round of 68.
Alexander birdied the first but then made back-to-back bogeys on holes three and four, which opened the door for Scotland’s McClymont.
Alexander added two more birdies on the front nine to turn one under for the day. And then she shut the door with four birdies on the back nine.
“It really wasn’t a nervous start. I mean I started with a birdie on the first. After those bogeys, my caddie and I said let’s just hit some fairways and greens, and not into positions that make extra work for us, and steady the ship a little. The back nine I knew I had to fire because Lorna was coming in hot.”
With her two birdies on the par-four 12th and par-five 13th things started to look good for Alexander on the back nine, although an eagle on the 13th from McClymont kept the pressure on her.
“She just wouldn’t quit. She chipped in for eagle and I was in the bunker. Luckily, I still made birdie to keep everything tight, but she definitely wasn’t giving up.”
With back-to-back birdies on the par-five 16th and par-three 17th for Alexander, and a bogey for McClymont on the 16th, the South African could almost smell victory.
“I said to myself just stay patient, they’ll come when they need to, and then on the 16th she was chipping just off the green for birdie and I hit it on with a three wood and had an eagle putt. She didn’t up-and-down and I secured the birdie. Going into the 17th the wind pushed it a little. It almost landed in the hole and I had a three-foot putt for birdie, and that was the end of it.”
First round leader Kaiyuree Moodley and France’s Anne-Charlotte Mora finished joint third on six-under-par, both shooting 68 on the final day.
Alexander is now looking forward to the next tournament on the Sunshine Ladies Tour, the SuperSport Ladies Challenge that will take place from 5-7 March at Cun City.
“I’ve won there a few times before. I know the course like the back of my hand, so I’m definitely going in there with a nice positive and confident attitude. I’m really looking forward to Sun City.”

Course record gives Alexander Jabra Ladies Classic lead
CAPE TOWN, Western Cape – South African professional Casandra Alexander signed for a course record eight-under-par 64 to lead the second round of the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s Jabra Ladies Classic at Westlake Golf Club on Thursday.
Alexander, the winner of the 2023 Jabra Ladies Classic, bettered the previous women’s course record of 66 and took the lead in this tournament on nine under par overall.
After making the turn in three-under, Alexander rolled in a birdie on the 10thfollowed by an eagle on the 13th, and then further birdies on the 14th and 16th holes for an impressive round.
“It was pretty slow because I just made a few birdies here and there, and then when I made the eagle things started to change a little” she said.
She was also delighted to come through her round bogey free. “It all adds up. Being bogey-free helps that your birdies mean something.”
Fellow South African Lora Assad is well placed just a shot behind Alexander following her second round of 70, with Scotland’s Lorna McClymont on six under after her round of 71.
Defending champion Cara Gorlei had a tough day starting her second round with two bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine. She fought back on the back nine, rolling in birdies on the 13th and 17thfor a 74 and a total of four over par, which was enough to make the cut for the final round.
The current Investec Order of Merit leader, Danielle du Toit, did not make the cut after a 75 for a total of five over par.
