Record beckons for Chun
South Korea’s In Gee Chun established a four-shot lead after the third round of the Evian Championship on Saturday to remain on course for her second career Major.
Chun shot a third-round 65 to extend her lead and her three day total of 19-under par 194 broke the 54-hole scoring record of 199, set by Annika Sorenstam at the 2004 LPGA Championship.
In fact, she already tied the 72-hole record in relation to par with 18 holes to play.
Chun had a strong back nine with three birdies and an eagle to finish four clear of compatriot Sung Hyun Park.
Shanshan Feng of China (69) is solo third and six shots back at 13 under, So Yeon Ryu from South Korea sits at fourth on 12 under.
Chun could make some more history today.
She could become just the second player in LPGA history, joining her idol and fellow South Korean Se Ri Pak, as players to win their first two LPGA titles at major championships.
Her four-day total will most likely find itself in the record books, too, but she has a shot at the 72-hole scoring record and most under par at an LPGA major championship.
Jason Day (2015 PGA Championship) and Henrik Stenson (2016 Open Championship) hold the men’s major record of 20-under par.
“It is a really big honour for me to have these records, but I will just stick with my game plan in the final round and not think about records,†said Chun.
Meanwhile Lee-Anne Pace carded 73 in the third round to slip out of the top 20 to joint 30th while compatriot Paula Reto climbed six spots to a tie for 51st with an even-par 71.
