Van Der Westhuizen grabs clubhouse lead in ABSA Ladies invitational

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Nadia van der Westhuizen ended Friday’s second day of the ABSA Ladies Invitational as the clubhouse leader on 11 under par, but with the round still to be completed at Royal Johannesburg.

The second round will resume at 06h15 on Saturday morning after being suspended due to bad light, with the third and final round not starting before 09:00.

Van Der Westhuizen, who signed for a second round of 68, currently leads by four shots over Tina Mazarino who also managed to complete her second round of 68.

Sanna Nuutinen, currently through eight holes, and Doris Chen, currently through five holes, were well placed on seven under when play ended on Friday.

The bad weather of the opening day means the second round will have to be completed on Saturday morning. Van Der Westhuizen had to complete her first round on Friday morning before going into her second round. She managed to do so with a 65 to lead by one shot.

“I am extremely happy about the first round. I haven’t had a bogey-free round in a very long time, I can’t even remember when last that happened,” she said.

Van Der Westhuizen had to endure a long day on Friday.

“I managed to finish 32 holes today to also finish the second round. I was a little bit nervous on the first tee, so starting with three birdies calmed the nerves a little bit. I did hit a few good shots during the round, but the putter was a bit cold. The birdie on the last hole almost topped the day for me –  finishing it off strong,” she added.

With two top-10 finishes already this year, Van Der Westhuizen will be banking on what has worked for her so far come Saturday’s final round.

“I think I will stick to the same gameplan. My caddie and I have really been working hard together trying to manage the scores as it is a tough course. I will be trying to give myself as many chances as possible, be aggressive when I need to, and know when not to be aggressive,” Van Der Westhuizen said.

Birdie blitz carries Venter to Platinum Ladies Open title

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – South Africa’s Gabrielle Venter birdied her final two holes of regulation play and then beat Norway’s Madelene Stavnar in a playoff to win the Platinum Ladies Open at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate on Friday.

After her strong finish to close with a 66 and tie Stavnar for the lead on 16 under par following the Norwegian’s final round of 68, Venter carried that momentum into the playoff and birdied the first playoff hole to win and claim her second Sunshine Ladies Tour title.

“I am very happy. I played great, hit some really good shots, and didn’t make any mistakes, which is a positive. I am very happy with the win,” Venter said.

The South African duo of Bobbi Brown (66) and Jordan Rothman shared third place with Iceland’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir (67) on 14 under par.

After battling with flu as well as a tough 27-hole second day cause by weather delays, Venter gave it everything during Friday’s final round knowing she had to be aggressive to stand a chance.

“I am still struggling with flu but the body held up fine and it didn’t hold me back today. Coming into the back nine I was hitting great shots but wasn’t making any putts, but I stayed consistent and aggressive. I knew on the 18th hole I had to go for it and then hit a really good drive to give myself the opportunity to do so, and I made the birdie putt,” Venter said.

Playing the par-five 18th again in the playoff, her gameplan was the same.

“I almost hit it in the exact same place, but unfortunately it ended up in a divot. I was thinking about laying it up, but decided it’s now or never. I just hit my five-wood as hard as I could, and it made it up the hill, which Ieft me with a two-putt for birdie and the win,” Venter said.

The Sunshine Ladies Tour will next head to Royal Johannesburg for the ABSA Ladies Invitational that will take place from 26-28 March.

Stavnar holds clubhouse lead in Platinum Ladies Open

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Norway’s Madelene Stavnar holds the clubhouse lead in the Platinum Ladies Open on 12 under par, and with the round set to be completed on Friday morning following the weather delays on the opening day.

The round will be completed on Friday morning before the start of the final round.

Stavnar managed to complete her second round on Thursday and signed for a 69 to lead by a single stroke over Scotland’s Lorna McClymont, who posted a 65.

The best placed South African after the second day is Gabrielle Venter (65), who had to navigate 27 holes to complete her first and second rounds. She is in joint third place on 10 under par with Kristyna Napoleaova (67), and Louisa Carlbom, who is through nine holes of her second round.

“I started off a bit slow today as I am a bit sick with flu. I wasn’t feeling my best at all,” said Venter.

“It was tough having to go out again today. But my second round was a great round. My ball striking was very good. I felt like I was playing very nicely and could have probably made a few more birdies. But all-in-all it was a really good round, especially for such a long day. I just battled it out today.”

Venter is hunting a third Sunshine Ladies Tour title this week.

“I will definitely stay aggressive, but I’ll keep taking it shot by shot. As I’m not feeling well, I don’t want to waste too much energy by thinking too much. So I will stay aggressive and see what happens,” Venter said.

Sizzling 62 gives Carlbom Platinum Ladies Open lead

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Sweden’s Louisa Carlbom made her intentions clear during Wednesday’s incomplete opening round of the Platinum Ladies Open at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate with a phenomenal round of 10-under-par 62 for the clubhouse lead.

Carlbom made it into the clubhouse before lightning suspended play. The first round will resume on Thursday morning.

“It’s definitely one of my best rounds of golf. I’ve had a round of seven under before, but never 10 under par, so it’s really exciting,” said the Swede.

Carlbom currently has a four-stroke lead over Finland’s Elina Saksa and Germany’s Theresa de Bochdanovits who share second place following their rounds of six-under-par 66.

Carlbom wasted no time in her round and started with an eagle on the par-five first hole followed by five birdies on the front nine to turn in 28. She followed that with three more birdies on the back nine.

“That front nine was pretty cool. I didn’t know exactly what score I was on, but I knew I was headed towards a record round for myself so I was getting a bit nervous. I hit a lot of greens and rolled in the putts. Tee to green was very solid today,” Carlbom said.

Carlbom, who finished in the top-10 in last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic, is happy that some hard off-season work is now being rewarded.

“I am really happy with where my game is currently. I’ve worked hard during the winter season and as I am from Sweden, a lot of practice happens indoors. So it’s good to try out what I have been working on with my coach on the course.”

After the strong opening round, Carlbom is excited about what the rest of the tournament can offer.

“I am really excited to play more golf on this beautiful golf course. It’s easy to enjoy golf on Blair Atholl. It presents opportunities with the par-fives being reachable, so it’s really nice,” she said.

Rookie Lau claims Jabra Ladies Classicin playoff

JOHANNESBURG (Gauteng) – Sunshine Ladies Tour rookie, Lois Lau of France, claimed her first title on the Tour with a playoff victory in the Jabra Ladies Classic at Killarney Country Club on Friday.

Lau closed with a 69 to tie for the lead with last year’s runner-up, Scotland’s Lorna McClymont (69), and South Africa’s Danielle du Toit (68), on nine under par.

Playing the par-four 18th again as the first playoff hole, Lau made birdie to secure the title as her two opponents had to settle for pars.

“I’m really happy and excited. This is also my first professional win,” said Lau, who also became only the second French winner of this title after Anne-Lise Caudal in 2019.

It was a dramatic end to a tournament that looked to be within McClymont’s grasp until she bogeyed the final hole to slip back into the playoff.

“I thought I really did good and I stayed really composed,” said Lau. “Before the round I decided to stay focussed on the process rather than thinking of the results, as sometimes I overthink my shots. My short game was good throughout the week, and today especially. I started feeling the pressure at the end as I knew I was very close to winning, so I placed a bit of positive pressure on myself. Overall I’m very proud of what I have done.”

Claiming her first professional victory in a playoff was also a boost for Lau.

“I hit a really good three-wood that left me a wedge shot in. I had adrenalin from the playoff so I took a club down and it was the perfect distance. The other two (McClymont and Du Toit) made par so I knew I had to make that birdie putt, and I could feel the pressure. I just focussed on my routine and stroke and it went in,” Lau said.

Scotland’s McClymont had to settle for second place for the second year running, this time joined by South Africa’s Du Toit.

Delacour claims glory in Investec South African Women’s Open

  • South Africa’s Casandra Alexander wins Investec Order of Merit
  • South Africa’s Kaiyuree Moodley wins R&A Rookie of the Year award

Michael Vlismas

SOMERSET WEST, Western Cape – France’s Perrine Delacour claimed her second victory on the Ladies European Tour when she won the Investec South African Women’s Open by two shots at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate on Sunday.

In a thrilling final round where the lead changed several times, Delacour made two key birdies in her final four holes to close with a 70 and win on 14 under par.

South Africa’s Casandra Alexander made a strong charge with her final round of 66 to take second place on 12 under par. Australia’s Kelsey Bennett and England’s Bronte Law shared third place on 11 under par.

Delacour started a windy final round with two bogeys in her first six holes to suddenly bring several players into contention.

“I didn’t start the way I wanted to. I didn’t know how many players were coming up behind me. I was just trying to stay focused on my own game. I made a great birdie on 15, which was playing very hard, and then another birdie on 16. Coming down 18, I knew I was leading but I didn’t know by how many shots, so on 18 I just wanted to hit the green and make par,” said Delacour.

The win was a huge confidence boost for the French golfer as she looks forward to dividing her time between the Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour.

“It’s been great to win again after a rough start to my year. I’m really happy because I sometimes struggle mentally and this proved I can win on tour even when not leading after nine holes, or being tied after nine holes. I trusted myself and got it done, so I’m pretty happy about that.”

The Investec South African Women’s Open was the final tournament on this year’s Sunshine Ladies Tour, with several season awards on offer.

South Africa’s Casandra Alexander wrapped up a magnificent season in which she claimed the overall Investec Order of Merit. Alexander had the best season of her career where she didn’t finish outside the top five in seven tournaments, including a win and three runner-up finishes.

“I feel like I really earned it this year. My team and I have worked so hard to get me in the right place to be able to play any golf course in any condition at any time. The confidence I can now take onto the Ladies European Tour is second to none. The game is in a good place, the confidence is in a good place, so who knows what the future holds,” said Alexander, who earned a R200 000 bonus and the use of a Renault car for a year.

Investec-sponsored golfer Kaiyuree Moodley won the R&A Rookie of the Year Award after an impressive first season on the Sunshine Tour where she had three top-10s and also finished sixth on the Investec Order of Merit.

And South Africa’s Gia Raad walked away with the Jackie Mercer trophy as the leading amateur. Raad was the only amateur to make the cut and closed with a 75 to finish on level par.

Tamburlini makes her move in Investec South African Women’s Open

Michael Vlismas

SOMERSET WEST, Western Cape – Chiara Tamburlini knows better than anybody that winning takes care of everything else, and she plans to follow that mantra as she takes a one-stroke lead into the weekend of the Investec South African Women’s Open at the Erinvale Country & Golf Estate.

The Swiss star took the Ladies European Tour by storm last year with her three victories – one of which came in a Sunshine Ladies Tour co-sanctioned event – as she also went on to win the Rookie of the Year award and the overall Order of Merit.

She showed that same level of golf on Friday as she signed for a seven-under-par 65 to lead this field on 11 under par. Her nearest challenger is France’s Perrine Delacour on 10 under after her round of 69.

“I’m really happy with how I played. Of course I think about last season and winning the Order of Merit, which I’d like to do again. But it’s difficult because there are a lot of good golfers out here. I’m just trying to break it down to small goals for myself. I want to win a tournament again, and to do that I’ve got to hit a bunch of good shots during the week, and that’s what I’m trying to focus on,” said Tamburlini.

She did exactly this on Friday, and her wedge game in particular was impressive.

“I converted my good approaches, and wasn’t really stressed when I had to chip to make par, so overall it was a really good day.”

The Swiss golfer took advantage of another stunning morning at Erinvale and started her round with consecutive birdies as she made her run at the top of the leaderboard. The wind started to pick up on her second nine, but it wasn’t enough to stop her charge.

“The front nine was still quite calm, but at the turn it got really hot and the wind picked up. The wind was also on-and-off, so you had to adjust all the time. But my game is feeling good.”

Behind her, Delacour is looking equally comfortable on this Gary Player-designed layout. Apart from a three-putt for bogey at the last on Friday, she’s had two days of supremely consistent golf.

“It’s definitely been a good two days. It also helps a lot with this view here. Even after that three-putt at the last, I looked up and thought, ‘Okay, it’s just golf’.”

Delacour has looked like she’s just enjoying a social round of golf at Erinvale as she’s calmly gone about her business, and has been happy to carry her own bag this week.

“I’ve been pretty patient out there. I’m carrying my own bag and just enjoying it as much as I can. So I’m just staying patient and trusting the process with my team. I’m definitely looking forward to the weekend. And after my round I relax by watching The Masters, so it’s nice to see some good views there as well.”

Germany’s Aline Krauter is well placed on eight under par after a second round of 71, while Kiera Floyd and amateur Gia Raad are the leading South Africans on seven under par. Floyd positioned herself for the weekend with a round of 67, while Raad signed for a 70. As the only amateur to make the cut, the young GolfRSA star will win the Jackie Mercer Trophy for the leading amateur.

Delacour and Krauter take early advantage in Investec South African Women’s Open

Michael Vlismas

SOMERSET WEST, Western Cape –
France’s Perrine Delacour and Germany’s Aline Krauter came through the first round of the Investec South African Women’s Open tied for the lead on a magnificent day in the winelands that brought the best out of this international field on Thursday.

Delacour and Krauter both opened with rounds of seven-under-par 65 at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate and lead by a single stroke over Namibia’s Bonita Bredenhann, France’s Lucie Malchirand and the Czech Republic’s Sara Kouskova. South African amateur Gia Raad also impressed with her first round of five-under-par 67.

“I’m pretty happy about that,” said Delacour, who admitted that Erinvale’s incredible views were a welcome distraction during her round.

“It’s pretty. I keep looking at the view. If you had a bad shot, you just look at the view and that helps a lot.”

Delacour teed off the 10th and did most of her scoring on her second nine where she had two birdies and an eagle in her first four holes after the turn. And she didn’t drop a shot on the first day of this Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned event.

“I’m trying to be a bit more relaxed about my game and accept that I’ll miss with some shots. I’m trying to not be a perfectionist all the time. I just have to keep trusting the process and see where we go. There is a lot of golf left to play,” she said.

Alongside her at the top of the leaderboard, Krauter had an equally solid day that featured strong finishes to both her nines. Also teeing off the 10th, she went to the turn with three birdies in four holes, and then ended her round with two birdies in her final three holes.

“It was amazing. It wasn’t as windy as I’ve heard it can get here, so I took advantage of that. I love the course and I’m excited for the rest of the week,” she said.

But it’s a tight leaderboard behind them.

Bredenhann was delighted to be amongst the early contenders at the end of a day where she had a hole-in-one on the par-three 14th, earning her a bottle of champagne for her efforts.

“My caddie and I were discussing clubs and I went for a six iron. It was 158 metres and I hit it perfect. When it pitched it rolled down to the hole and I shouted for it to go in, which it did. It was an amazing feeling. It’s my second hole-in-one on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this season,” she said.

It was a low-scoring start to this tournament, with 15 golfers within three shots of the lead by the end of the day.

Investec South African Women’s Open showcases Out of the Ordinary talent

Michael Vlismas

SOMERSET WEST, Western Cape – The 32nd Investec South African Women’s Open will showcase the growing depth of international women’s golf, and specifically some of the most inspiring stories from a host of South African women professionals who are chasing glory at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate this week.

The final tournament on this year’s Sunshine Ladies Tour has drawn a quality field that includes the stars of the Ladies European Tour, with €340 000 (approximately R7.1 million) in prize money on offer when the first round tees off on Thursday.

South African women’s golf’s most historic tournament has also drawn a few golfers who epitomise the Out of the Ordinary talent on display this week.

It was exactly after this tournament in 2020 that Ivanna Samu arrived home to a diagnosis of cancer. Having bravely overcome this disease, she is now back in this field with a whole new focus on her career. During her treatment Samu decided to help out with coaching young golfers to take her mind off things, and which gave even greater meaning to her involvement in the Sally Little and Imibala Golf Clinic with young golfers at Erinvale on Wednesday.

“When I was going through my cancer I felt very down, and just seeing the joy on the kids’ faces brought joy to my own heart. I’ve played in this tournament as an amateur and now as a professional. The Investec South African Women’s Open is a great tournament, and the opportunity to compete against the Ladies European Tour professionals gives me a great idea of where I want to get to. I’ll be going to the LET Qualifying School this year, and this is where it starts. This is the opportunity we have been given,” she said.

The 23-year-old Kaiyuree Moodley has taken the Sunshine Ladies Tour by storm this year and is leading the R&A Rookie of the Year standings while also occupying a place inside the top 10 on the Investec Order of Merit. The rising star of South African women’s golf already has playing privileges on the Ladies European Tour, and has also been selected as one of Investec’s sponsored golfers for the season. There was a sense of her coming full circle as she took part in the Sally Little and Imibala Golf Clinic.

“Sally Little actually invited me to one of her golf clinics when I was just starting out in the game. So being able to come back and give something back to her clinic is awesome. And if you’d told me at the beginning of the year that I would be sponsored by Investec in my first year as a professional I would’ve laughed. It’s fantastic because I can now play freely without having to worry about anything. I feel very privileged to be here,” she said.

Danielle du Toit has overcome her own challenges to get to this point in her career where she tees off on Thursday as a winner this year already on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.

“This is the tournament you dream of winning, as a South African. But this game has opened so many doors for me. I’m excited for the week,” she said.

For Little herself, this week is about exactly these opportunities for the next generation of South African women golfers and the inspiration they are to others.

“To come to a tournament as a young professional and have the opportunity to play a golf course like Erinvale, it elevates that feeling of them being able to take their careers overseas and to achieve their dreams. It’s beautiful to see, and I’ll be pulling for a South African winner this year,” she said.

Entrance is free for spectators, with free parking at Lourensford Wine Estate.
The tournament will also be televised live on SuperSport from Thursday to Sunday.

World-class field chasing top honours in Investec South African Women’s Open

Michael Vlismas

SOMERSET WEST, Western Cape – The Sunshine Ladies Tour is headed for a thrilling finale at this week’s €340 000 (Approximately R7.1 million) 32nd edition of the Investec South African Women’s Open at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate, where the stars of South African women’s professional golf and the Ladies European Tour will compete for top honours and a host of prestigious season awards.

The final tournament of the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s 12th season has drawn a strong field, including winners from both tours this season, who will compete for the most historic trophy in South African women’s professional golf.

The prize money for this year’s tournament has also been increased by €20 000, making it one of Africa’s richest women’s sports events. And the growing interest in this year’s event and women’s golf overall is reflected in the fact that for the first time in Sunshine Ladies Tour history there will be a double pro-am.

Apart from the title of Investec South African Women’s Open champion, this week’s field will also be chasing several added incentives.

With this being the final event of the Sunshine Ladies Tour season, the top-ranked player on the Investec Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn a R200 000 bonus.

Should the winner of this week’s tournament be a South African, she will also earn a R100 000 bonus on top of her first-placed prize money as part of the Investec Homegrown Award celebrating local talent in the game.

And the leading South African on the Investec Order of Merit at the end of this season will win the use of a Renault for a year.

These are all titles South Africa’s Casandra Alexander will be chasing as the current leader on the Investec Order of Merit and the in-form golfer this season, having not finished outside the top five in her past six tournaments on the Sunshine Ladies Tour, including a win and two runners-up finishes.

Alexander has twice finished second on the Investec Order of Merit in 2021 and 2023 and third in 2022, and her consistency this season has brought her to Erinvale in easily the best form of her career.

“This level of consistency is exactly what I’ve been working towards. The aim has been to be in contention every single week, and I’ve achieved that. So hopefully the form continues,” she said.

The end of the season will also see the crowning of the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s inaugural
R&A Rookie of the Year award.

South Africa’s Kaiyuree Moodley is leading the rookie race with a breakout first season in which she’s had three top-10s this season and earned her Ladies European Tour card.

The R&A Rookie of the Year at the end of the season will, if not already exempt, receive automatic exemptions into the 2026 Joburg Ladies Open and the 2026 Investec South African Woman’s Open.

It’s a week of rewards and incentives that aligns perfectly with Investec’s own belief in extraordinary talent and nurturing South African talent in particular.

“Investec’s support of women’s golf is to create exactly these opportunities for growth in the game and to help unlock the investment in this talent. It’s a privilege for us to continue supporting homegrown female talent in golf on the international stage, and along with our partners we’ve increased the prize money this year as part of our commitment to the continued elevation of the national Open and women’s golf,” said Peta Dixon, head of sponsorships at Investec.

“In the broader sense of women’s sport, the Investec South African Women’s Open is a powerful statement of what’s possible through out of the ordinary partnerships in women’s sport as a whole. We had a memorable Investec South African Open on the men’s Sunshine Tour in which Dylan Naidoo made history, and this week’s Investec South African Women’s Open is poised to be equally career defining for the champion.”

Entrance is free for spectators, with free parking at Lourensford Wine Estate.
The tournament will also be televised live on SuperSport from Thursday to Sunday.
